Getting There By Rail

Rail Services Australia is the federal body for state-operated rail services. For New South Wales, the network is run by Countrylink (tel: 132 232, Australia only; website: www.countrylink.nsw.gov.au). They run high-speed XPT trains and Explorer trains for shorter distances. Sydney's Central Station is located on Eddy Avenue, just south of the city centre. The grand old building is lined with newsagents, coffee shops and restaurants, as well as transport and tourist information offices.

Rail services: Popular inter-state destinations include Melbourne (10 hours), Brisbane (12.5 hours), Adelaide (26 hours) and Perth (64 hours). Rail travel tends to be expensive, although a number of rail passes are available to visitors from overseas.

Transport to the city: Central Station connects directly to the CityRail metro line.
